The ancestor of humanities—Fuxi-人文始祖—伏羲氏

Fuxi is also known as Fuxi, Paoxi (or Paoxushi), and Fuxi. At the same time, Xihuang, Huangxi, Taihao, and Baohu also refer to Fuxi. In “Historical Records”, the name Fuxi is used. The Fuxi family probably lived in the middle to late New Era, and together with Shennong and Huangdi, they were revered as the “Three Emperors”, the humanistic ancestors of the Chinese nation. According to legends and historical records, Fuxi was one of the earliest kings in my country. His activities marked the beginning of Chinese civilization, so he was revered as the head of the Three Emperors. There are many myths and legends about Fuxi.

According to legend, Fuxi was born in a paradise-like country, and his mother was a beautiful woman named Huaxu. One day, the Huaxu family took advantage of the beautiful wind and sunshine to go out for fun and came to a large swamp. The place was full of exotic flowers and plants, with clouds and mist lingering in the middle. The scenery was breathtaking. This was the legendary land of the God of Thunder – “Thunder” Ze”. The god of thunder has the body of a dragon and the head of a human, and he makes roaring thunder sounds by inflating his abdomen. Hua Xu came here and was intoxicated by the beautiful scenery. As he walked, he saw a huge footprint on the ground with a strange shape. She thought this was the territory of the God of Thunder, and this huge footprint undoubtedly belonged to the God of Thunder. Out of curiosity, Hua Xu stepped on it involuntarily. Suddenly, she felt in a trance and felt hot all over, as if she was wrapped by a snake and couldn’t move. It took a while before she could get out of the big footprints.

Hua Xu became pregnant soon after she returned, and later gave birth to a boy with the head of a human and the body of a snake. Huaxu became pregnant after stepping on the footprints of the God of Thunder. The child had the head of a human and the body of a snake. It was obvious that he was the child of the God of Thunder. Huaxu named him Fuxi. Fuxi is a demigod who combines humans and gods. He has been extremely smart since he was a child.

After Fuxi grew up, Huaxu passed away. At this time Fuxi decided to leave the place where he grew up and travel outside. As he walked eastward, he carefully observed various phenomena along the way, whether it was the movement of stars, birds, animals, insects, or fish.

He saw fishermen catching fish in the water with their bare hands, and hunters risking their lives to chase their prey. Although it was very hard, they achieved very little. Fuxi thought, how can this situation be improved? However, he didn’t stop. He walked for a long time and felt tired, so he lay down under a tall tree to rest. After a while, he fell asleep and dreamed that he was in heaven, and a voice told him that both heaven and earth needed a wise and wise person to transform them, and he was that person. After Fuxi woke up, he thought about the voice in his dream and continued to travel.

When he walked to the Central Plains, he saw the hard life of the people here and was deeply touched. He decided to end his travels and stay here to help the people here.

Once, Fuxi saw a spider making a web and was deeply inspired. He imitated the spider and knotted the ropes to make many large nets. The ones with larger meshes were used to catch animals, and the smaller ones were used for fishing. Since the advent of nets, people’s harvests from fishing and hunting have greatly increased. The beasts they hunted could not be eaten all, so they kept them in captivity. From then on, people began to raise livestock. In addition, he also invented musical instruments such as the harp and the harp, and composed music, which brought music into people’s lives; he invented words to record events, ending the history of knotting ropes to record events; he reformed marriage customs and advocated the etiquette of men marrying women. , ended the original state of group marriage.

With Fuxi’s help, people’s lives are much richer than before, and their quality of life has been greatly improved. In order to thank Fuxi, the people of each tribe unanimously elected him as their common holy master. He became the first true leader of the tribal alliance, that is, the first king.

However, Fuxi’s greatest contribution was to invent and create Bagua based on the principles of yin and yang changes between heaven and earth. He gave eight simple symbols profound meanings to summarize the changes in everything in heaven and earth. According to legend, the place where Fuxi painted Bagua is called Guatai Mountain. Under Fuxi’s rule, the world enjoyed peace and prosperity, and the sky also sent down auspicious signs to reward Fuxi.

One day, Fuxi received a report that a strange animal appeared in Guatai Mountain, with a dragon head and a horse body, and very strange patterns on its body. Fuxi hurried to watch, and when he arrived at Guatai Mountain, he saw the dragon horse. Fuxi always liked to observe, and sometimes he would study the footprints of birds and animals and the patterns on their bodies. He found that there were many black and white dots on the body of the dragon horse. Looking carefully, the distribution of these dots was very regular. The dragon horse later jumped onto a large stone in the Weishui River at the foot of Guatai Mountain. The shape of the stone was like Tai Chi, which contrasted with the patterns on the dragon horse. Fuxi suddenly had an idea, and after thinking about it, he drew Bagua.

Bagua has eight directions, which refer to the eight most representative natural entities of heaven, earth, water, fire, wind, thunder, mountains, and lakes. It reflects the growth and decline of natural yin and yang and the mutually reinforcing relationship of everything in the world. It is the essence of Fuxi culture. feature. Until now, countless scholars at home and abroad are still attracted by it, exploring and studying it. In contemporary times, many scientists have drawn inspiration from it to advance the development of science. It is said that the great German mathematician Leibniz was inspired by Bagua to invent the binary system.

Fuxi made great contributions to mankind. In order to commemorate Fuxi’s birth, the locals changed the name of the place to Chengji. “Hanshu” records: “Chengji belongs to Hanyang County, and Hanyang County is Tianshui County. The place where the ancient emperor Fuxi was born.” In other words, Tianshui, Gansu Province is the ancient Chengji. Therefore, Tianshui, Gansu Province is known as the “Hometown of Emperor Xi”. Every year on the 16th day of the first lunar month, which is Fuxi’s birthday, Tianshui City holds the Fuxi Cultural Festival.

According to legend, Fuxi was the son of the God of Thunder, with the head of a human and the body of a snake. But since ancient times, there have been many different opinions about Fuxi. Some say that in ancient times, Fuxi and Nuwa were brother and sister. After they got married, they reproduced and became the ancestors of mankind. Some people say that Fuxi is the real founder of Taoism, and that the human head and snake body are only used to represent “Tao”, because that is the prototype of the word “Tao”, and he himself is not a human head and snake body. Some scholars also pointed out that Fuxi belonged to a snake clan and respected snakes. The leaves or animal skins he wears are shaped like the scales or patterns on a snake, and are the emblem or totem symbol of the snake clan. There is also a saying that he is the title of an outstanding leader of the ancient Chinese tribes. Fuxi, Paoxi, Baoxi, Fuxi, or Xihuang, Huangxi, and Taihao are all tribal leaders of the Fuxi clan. The names of these people They live in different times but have the same status, so they can all be called “Fuxi”.
